Like many of his contemporaries in Indonesia, Beno ended his studies after graduating from high school. This made it difficult for him to find work, as many local employers required certification of his skills before they would hire him.

During COVID-19, it seemed to Beno that his options were dwindling even further.

Beno knew that he could use his passion for digital technologies to build a career, but first he needed additional skills training and – just as importantly – certification of his new competencies.

After completing the Kartu Prakerja Programme, Beno found employment in a company that was planning to carry out a digitization process.

He took the initiative and completed two further training opportunities offered through the Kartu Prakerja Program: Working in the Digital World and Processing Microsoft Excel & PowerPoint.

Digital technologies have changed how we share, access and produce information. The global pandemic greatly accelerated the need for people to increase their digital competencies in order to participate in lifelong learning and employment opportunities.

It’s no surprise, then, that Beno’s newly acquired digital skills were seen as a great asset to employers.

Beno's hard work paid off. With the certification he acquired through the Kartu Prakerja Program, he was able to find a job as a foreman on a plantation in Sintang District, West Kalimantan, Indonesia, where sustainability initiatives are promoted.

Beno’s determination to be a lifelong learner has secured him a decent job and a sustainable future.

The Kartu Prakerja Program represents a milestone for the Indonesian Government in supporting UNESCO’s mission to promote adult learning and education.

Through this platform, which is aligned with President Jokowi’s 2019 campaign promise to provide access for skilling, upskilling and reskilling, Indonesia has taken a step forward in creating access for its citizens to lifelong learning opportunities that will allow them to qualify for better job opportunities and contribute to society.
